Rückblick Québec Bavarian Clusters Forum 2010

The Québec–Bavaria Clusters Forum in Munich on November 22nd and 23rd accelerated the emergence and realization of collaboration and partnership opportunities among members of Québec’s niches of excellence and industrial clusters and Bavaria’s clusters. In this regard, the meeting were a catalyst for further cooperation and partnership between Bavaria and Québec.

Eröffnung des Québec Bavaria Clusters ForumEröffnung des Québec Bavaria Clusters ForumMoreover, this activity aimed at promoting the exchange of information on issues of mutual interest for both regions in specified target sectors, such as innovation and technology transfer, and at sharing experiences related to European and North American realities. As such, it made it possible to capitalize on the respective leadership positions of both regions in several leading-edge sectors.   In Québec, more than 40 niches of excellence are active in 15 regions through the ACCORD (Action concertée de coopération régionale de développement) project, coordinated by the Ministère du Développement économique, de l’Innovation et de l’Exportation (MDEIE). As for the Montréal and Laval regions, they are covered by a similar approach that focuses on the development of industrial clusters.

Auditorium der KeynotesAuditorium der KeynotesThe Opening of the meeting and full group session focused on issues of mutual interest, to be attended by Martin Zeil, Bavarian minister of economics and Clément Gignac, Québec minister of economics, and specific presentations by the representatives of the clusters. Keynotes are held by Dr. Reinhold E. Achatz, Head of Siemens AG Corporate Research and Technologies and Corporate Vice President of Corporate Technology, and Dr. Howard Bergmann, Vice-president of Fonds de la Recherche en Santé du Québec (FRSQ).

The afternoon provided an opportunity for representatives of Québec’s niches of excellence and industrial clusters and Bavarian clusters to connect in the field.

Evening ReceptionEvening ReceptionThe Québec–Bavaria reception was also attended by Martin Zeil, Bavarian minister of economics and Clément Gignac, Québec minister of economics.

On November 23rd there were several tours of industrial facilities or research centres, or round table with technology managers of Bavarian global players. The ICT-group visited fortiss and IRT. Both are research institutes fortiss in the field of embedded systems and IRT in broadcasting.

In the afternoon the participants continued discussions during sector-specific sub-group meetings or individual networking meetings.

The Québec-Bavaria cluster meeting was announced by Jean Charest, Prime Minister of Quebec, and Horst Seehofer, Bavarian Prime Minister, in June 2009 and officially reconfirmed in February 2010. Biotechnology and life sciences and information and communications technologies were identified as main themes for this meeting.
